STANDARD SEARCH
The standard search function can be found in the Home page of ASEAN TMview
This standard search is based on a single search criterion. All trademarks containing the string of text you have provided will be retrieved.
When you would like to be more restrictive with your search and use more than one search criterion, ASEAN TMview provides two alternative search options:
- the standard search option with more than one search criteria
- the advanced search option.
STANDARD SEARCH WITH MORE THAN ONE SEARCH CRITERIA
You can use the standard search function as a shortcut to perform an advanced search, by combining logical operators to the codes listed below.
Search criteria | Code |
---|---|
Trademark office code | oc: |
Trademark name (default) | tm: |
Trademark application number | an: |
Trademark type | ty: |
Trademark status code | sc: |
Applicant name | anm: |
Nice class | nc: |
Vienna code | vc: |
Opposition date | od: |
Application date | ad: |
Logical Operators
The logical operators AND, OR and AND NOT are simple logical operations to combine terms. Please note they should always be written in capital letters.
- AND: Forces the result set to satisfy both operands criteria.
As an example of this logical operator, if you write the following string in the standard search bar:tm:cafe AND oc:my, the search will retrieve all marks containing the text string cafe and that have been ifiled through the IP Office of Malaysia.
TIP: If you are unsure about how to use the codes, select the advanced search option instead. Please note that while configuring a search through the advanced search option, your chosen search criteria will appear in the standart search field, allowing you to see how the syntax of the codes works. This search string can be manually edited, in particular to modify the logical operator. Please note that by default the logical operator is AND.
WARNING: With the exception of AND, the use of other logical operators is only possible in the standard search field and is not compatible with the advanced search.
Wildcards
Wildcards can be used when searching for trademark names or applicant names in the standard search and the advanced search.
Wildcard -- -- allows you to match single or multiple characters within words. The '*' wildcard will match either 0 or multiple letters in your term. e.g. trade will match 'trade', 'trades', 'trader', etc. you can use wildcards at the beginning, in the middle or at the end of your term. e.g.*trade or tr*de or trad*.
Wildcard -- -- allows you to match any single character within a word. e.g. b?ll will match 'ball', 'bell' and 'bill'. Note that you can use wildcards at the beginning, in the middle or at the end of your term.
ADVANCED SEARCH
The advanced search provides the choice of 10 search criteria which can be used separately or in combination. Specific information for each of the ten fields is provided below.
Please read carefully these two explanatory notes related to the Advanced Search screen that can help you when first using this search option:
- The following search criteria cannot be used alone: Trademark type, Nice class and Vienna code. These criteria must be combined with at least one more search criteria.
- As some offices do not use in their register certain criteria, those same criteria cannot be used to search their trademarks. Because searches may be launched for all the offices at once, if you use in the advanced search a criterion not available for an office, TMview will show the results for this office, but without applying the mentioned search criterion to the list of results from this office.
Advanced Search Fields
Trademark offices:limit the search to one or more trademark offices by ticking the corresponding check boxes in the drop down window.
Trademark name:TMview will search and retrieve all marks where the entered string appears as a separate word. If more than one word is entered, TMview will retrieve all marks where each entered string appears as a separate word in the same trademark name.
Additional options :
- Linguistic search : you can check this box to search for trademarks with similar names (similar in spelling). Please note this type of search is based on the Levenshtein distance, or edit distance algorithm. To do a linguistic search, TMview uses the tilde, '~', symbol at the end of a single word or term. For example to search for a term similar in spelling to roam you will see the following in the search field: tm:roam~0.7. This search will find terms like foam and road. The value 0.7 indicates the degree of similarity between the term used in the search field and those appearing in the list of results. The value can be modified but has to be between 0 and 1, where a value closer to 1 will return and match terms with a higher similarity. For example: tm:roam~0.8
- Strict Search : you can check this box to retrieve trademarks that include the exact string entered (trademark name and respective order). This option only works when the trademark contains more than one word. If only one word is entered, the search will retrieve the same list of results as a normal search.
Trademark reference number: TMview allows you to search for a specific trademark if you know the application or registration number for the trademark you are looking for.
Trademark type:the search by trademark type offers four search options:
Search option | Results |
---|---|
All | Any trademark will be searched for |
Word | Word marks consist solely of words and contain no figurative elements |
Figurative | Figurative marks have a graphical representation. However, depending on the office, the concept of figurative marks may slightly differ: When a figurative trademark also contains a name (having a name is the characteristic of a word mark) then some offices classify this figurative trademark as a combined trademark. In TMview, any mark containing a graphical representation is listed under "figurative". You will then get: Figurative, Combined and 3D marks in the list of results when selecting the mark type Figurative. |
Other | In TMview, Other refers to any trademark type except those already covered by Figurative and Word. |
Please see the table below showing the correspondence between TMview trademark types and office's types and also the availability of each type in each of the ASEAN offices.

Trademark status: the search by trademark statuses offers five search options:
Search option | Results |
---|---|
All | Any trademark will be included in the search |
Registered (R) | The trademark is legally protected |
Filed (A) | The trademark is still an application and is undergoing the examination procedure. The trademark has therefore not been registered yet. |
Ended (E) | The trademark has been refused, cancelled, withdrawn etc. |
Expired (X) | The trademark has been refused, cancelled, withdrawn etc. |
Applicant name:TMview will search and retrieve all marks where the entered string appears in the applicant name. If more than one name is entered, TMview will retrieve all marks where each entered string appears in the applicant name.
Additional options:
- Linguistic search : you can check this box to search for applicants names that are similar in spelling.
Nice class: Nice Class contains numerical codes that describe the goods and services associated with the trademark.
You can search for one or more classes by indicating the numerical codes separated by commas, e.g. 12,35; 1,14,20.
If you would like to search for several correlative classes, you can do so by indicating the first and last numerical code you would like to search for with two dots between them, e.g. 12..15.
For help finding the relevant classes, click the selector button to the right of the search field. The selector displays the class headings of each class and allows you to choose class numbers. Mark one or more class numbers by clicking on each number and click OK to add the class number(s) to the search field.
WARNING: please be aware that the Nice class cannot be used alone as a search criterion. It has to be combined with at least one more criterion.
Vienna code:Vienna class contains numerical codes that describe the visual appearance of the image associated to each record, if any. You can search for Vienna classifications by entering the desired Vienna code in the search field using the format 00.00.00.
It is not possible to search by Vienna code using the main category alone, e.g. 01. A search specifying the second level, e.g. 01.01, will retrieve all marks belonging to the particular subcategory. Entering the entire code, e.g. 01.01.12, will find marks classified in this subcategory only.
WARNING: Please be aware that the Vienna code cannot be used alone as a search criterion. It has to be combined with at least one more criterion.
Opposition: by checking the box in this field, you will search only for trademarks that currently are in the opposition period. Please note that the duration of the opposition period differs from one office to another. The search will provide trademarks which are opposable according to the trademark offices´ different opposition periods.
WARNING: Please note ASEAN TMview uses the international Gregorian calendar.
Application date:to find trademarks applied for within a particular period, type the dates of such period using the 'DD-MM-YYYY' format. If you only fill in the From field, the search will retrieve marks with an application date on and after the entered date. If you only fill in the To field, the search will retrieve marks with an application date on or before the entered date.
WARNING: Please note ASEAN TMview uses the international Gregorian calendar.
Sort results by : you can sort the list of results by a preferred field by choosing it from the drop down menu list.

RESULTS
The moment you perform a search, the results area display the records that match your current search. It is divided into three main sections, the search status and preferences area that lets you know the status of your search for each participating office (search status) and the fields that will be displayed in the record list (preferences), the list of results that displays details of each record, and the pager bar that lets you navigate through the results set.
SEARCH STATUS AND PREFERENCES AREA
This is the first area below the search bar that will appear when you perform a search.
The first tap on the left is called search status, where a list of all participating offices will be displayed. Next to each office name, two different icons can appear:
means the search was successful.
means the search was successful plus there are more results to be viewed. Click the link after trademark office once to view more trademarks from the corresponding trademark office, which will then be added to the list of results.
The second tap is called preferences, where a list of all available search fields will be displayed. By checking or unchecking the boxes next to each search field, you will be able to add or remove columns in the record list below.
By default the following columns are selected and displayed: TM Name, IP Office, TM Number, TM Status, Nice Class(es), Applicant name, Application date, TM type and Representation. You can also choose to display three other columns: Vienna code, Start of opposition period and Opposition deadline.
Please note the column for Opposition deadline gives information as to how many days there are left to oppose the different trademarks in the list of results. If the field is empty, the trademark can no longer be opposed.
Additionally, you can change the default settings of the list of results for the following two preference options:
- Display 10/20/50/100/200/500 results per page: Change the number of results per page to be displayed in the record list.
- Remember column layout: Check this box in order to save the column layout for your next searches.
LIST OF RESULTS AREA
Pager Bar
The pager bar shows a quick summary of your result set, and lets you navigate between pages of results. You can find this bar at both, the top and at the bottom of the record list to ease your navigation. It is divided into several areas:
- First, the page area that lets you navigate between pages of records. The text box lets you enter a specific page of results you are interested in, or you can use the navigation buttons around the box to move to the next/previous or first/last pages of results.

- Next, your position in your result set is shown, e.g. Displaying Results 601-700 of 1280. This means you are currently viewing records 01-700 out of a total of 1280.
List of Results
The list of results shows the specific records that match your current search. Records are displayed in a List format.
By default, the list of results is ordered by trademark name ascending. You can click on any of the headers to sort your results by that column.
TIP: when the trademark number starts with WO, this indicates it is an international registration, filed through WIPO and having effects in the designated country.
The order of the columns may be changed by dragging the column heading to the desired place.
You can hide a column by clicking on the 'Hide column' option displayed when moving the mouse to the right of each column header.
To access the details of a trademark displayed in the list of search results, click on the TM Name or TM Number in the list of results. A new tab containing the trademark details will appear next to the tap with the list of search results. Up to ten tabs with trademark details can be displayed simultaneously.
Record View
All details available for each trademark will be displayed in a separate screen when pressing on the TM Name or TM Number in the list of results.
You will be able to export the information for a particular trademark in PDF, excel or XML formats as well as print for further reference. All these actions can be performed by clicking on the different icons that appear on the bar at the top of the record screen.
WARNING:Please do not use your browser 'back' button, as this might navigate you away from your current search or ASEAN TMview
